On March 26, 2020, the United States became the country with the largest number of coronavirus cases in the world, surpassing both Italy and China. The following day, CNN reported that governors in 24 states had issued orders for residents to stay home to try to stop the spread of the virus, orders that affected more than half of Americans. Not surprisingly, the virus has brought the U.S. economy to its knees in recent days, with a record 3.3 million people — and climbing — filing for unemployment.

To combat this devastation, Congress passed a landmark $2.2 trillion economic relief plan to assist businesses and individual citizens. On March 27, President Donald Trump signed the bill into law, giving comfort to Americans that relief checks soon will be on the way. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Americans should see money directly deposited into their bank accounts within three weeks. Paper checks will be mailed to those who don’t have an account number on file with the government.

While this is good news for many, the size of the check varies depending on your financial situation, which means the added headache of figuring out how much you can expect from Uncle Sam. And between rising unemployment rates, stock market drops and the outrageous cost of toilet paper on eBay, you might have too many numbers rolling around your head to calculate that amount. This goes double if you’re married.
